How to recycle your Christmas tree in Austin

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:43:16 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- The season for holiday decorations is almost over, which means lots of people are going to be figuring out what to do with their live Christmas trees. Instead of dumping them, consider recycling. The Austin Resource Recovery encourages Austinites to give their trees a second life by repurposing them into mulch or compost, and starting Dec. 26, the City of Austin curbside customers can place all-natural holiday trees curbside to be collected on their regularly scheduled composting collection day. Trees can also be dropped off at Zilker Park for recycling. The City of Austin has been recycling holiday trees for over thirty years. Only all-natural trees are accepted. If being recycled curbside, trees should be set out by 5:30 a.m. All ornaments, decorations (including tinsel), lights and tree stands must be removed, and trees six feet or taller should be cut in half. Trees sprayed with flocking are not accepted, and trees should not be placed in plastic bags. The 37th A...

St. Peters man catches state record fish from Missouri River

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:43:16 GMT

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - A St. Peters man reeled in a state-record-matching fish from the Missouri River earlier this month. The Missouri Department of Conservation reports that Anthony Rozniak caught a three-pound skipjack herring on Dec. 6 while fishing with his brother near St. Louis. Rozniak and his brother were hoping to reel in catfish that day. His first catch of the day was a one-and-a-half-pound skipjack. Moments later, Rozniak enjoyed an even bigger surprise. Soulard bar owners question legitimacy of NYE bar crawl promoted online “The very next cast was double that size,” he told MDC. “We had only been out fishing for 15 minutes by the time I caught it. I looked at my brother and said, ‘I hate to cancel our fishing trip, but we got a state record! We got to go!’”MDC officials weighed the fish at their St. Louis regional office. MDC says Rozniak matched the pole-and-line record for a skipjack herring, also attained in 2017 and 2019 in the Osage River. Close ...

Do you have slow Wi-Fi this holiday season? Your Christmas lights could be the reason

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:43:16 GMT

ST. LOUIS – Tangled in Wi-Fi issues this holiday season? Surprisingly, your Christmas lights might be the hidden culprit. While the lights themselves don't directly interfere with Wi-Fi signals, the flashing or flickering LED bulbs, especially those with cheap or poorly built power supplies, can cause disruptions.Certain LED lights produce electrical noise, which is the source of the interference. This noise, often a hum or buzzing, results from the internal electronic vibrations of the LED driver. There's a chance this electrical noise falls within the same frequency range as Wi-Fi signals, particularly in the commonly used 2.4 GHz band. Are you using your headlights properly? Missouri law has guidelines on light usage When the Christmas lights' electrical noise mingles with Wi-Fi signals, it can lead to slowed connections or brief outages. To combat Wi-Fi interference, opt for high-quality LED Christmas lights that adhere to electromagnetic compatibility standards. These lights a...

Nuggets’ Jamal Murray still hopes to join Canada at Olympics despite injury-littered start to season: “It’s been a rocky beginning, but I think we’re on the right track”

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:43:16 GMT

TORONTO — Jamal Murray’s postgame news conferences during the Nuggets’ annual trips to Canada have become almost as big a deal as the games themselves. Especially now that he’s an NBA champion. In his latest, after scoring 20 points in a 113-104 win over the Raptors on Wednesday night, Murray reaffirmed his plan to join Team Canada at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris — if he stays healthy between now and then. That’s easier said than done, if the first two months of this season are any indicator.“I’m still trying to get there (to the level I want to play at),” the Nuggets point guard said. “Obviously I’ve been in and out of the lineup. Just trying to get my body right. I’ve been on a minutes restriction for a while now. So just trying to build my way up and stay healthy for the remainder of the season. It’s been a rocky beginning, but I think we’re on the right track.”Murray missed most of November (11 games total) with a ri...

This foolproof tart is ready to feed a party

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:43:16 GMT

By Genevieve Ko, The New York TimesIt’s been a hard year, and finding small joys feels particularly important right now around the holidays. When I considered which treat could deliver that happiness in this season (aside from cookies, of course), I remembered the first pastry I learned as a restaurant cook. In the basement corner of a little French bistro, we turned out chocolate tarts, the elegant little black dress of desserts.Fashioned in the style of renowned chef Joël Robuchon’s recipe, the filling was as creamy as pudding and as silky and softly set as crème brûlée. With a buttery, crisp crust, the tart made the diners feel special and the cooks feel empowered by their baking prowess. This big chocolate tart does the same and requires no professional training to guarantee stunning results. In a significant departure from most tarts, it’s made in a rectangular cake pan. The speed bump edges of a fluted tart pan, and even the smooth lines of a tart ring, necessitate stressful dou...
