AUSTIN (KMID/KPEJ) – An investigation into a high school softball game in Texas that made headlines earlier this month has resulted in two-year probations for the school district and its athletics director. The Texas University Interscholastic League launched its investigation after a catcher playing for McCamey High School appeared to deliberately hit a batter in the head with a throw — not once, but twice. What happened to Gadzooks, the iconic mall store of the 1990s? McCamey was facing off against Cisco High School in early May when the incidents occurred. In video captured by one of the batters' parents, a Cisco batter was at the plate when the McCamey catcher looked as if she was throwing toward third base. Instead, she hit the Cisco batters in their heads with the ball.No one was ejected after either instance.“This is surely uncalled for. Catcher should have been ejected,” one viewer wrote after seeing the viral video on Facebook. Another called her a “dirty player.” ...Spotty storms ahead of wetter weather Memorial Day

Too much red tape or inertia?Thank you for the editorial from Bloomberg Opinion calling attention to the thousands of immigrants, refugees and U.S. citizens who have work experience elsewhere to whom we should turn to fill our huge demand (“Immigration can help solve the nursing shortage,” May 25). First step should be compiling local lists of them by skill set, like lab technicians, nursing aids, clinic and hospital nurses, public health officials, department managers and doctors. What paperwork or internships are required to hire them? Here in Minnesota we have hundreds of Afghan women and men who worked for the U.S. government, Scandinavian and Japanese hospitals, international NGOs and U.N. agencies. While they were still at Camp McCoy in 2021 a doctor who had worked for the U.S. until he fled with this wife and several children told how he was not allowed to practice in the U.S. even though he might help in the camp.
