California’s Dungeness crab season delayed again

Published Sun, 10 Nov 2024 23:28:09 GMT

California’s Dungeness crab season delayed again On Friday, the California Fish and Wildlife Department ordered another delay in the commercial Dungeness crab fishing season — the second so far this winter. The risk of whales becoming tangled in crab fishing gear remains high for most of the coastal waters from the Mendocino County line south to the Mexican border, director Charlton H. Bonham announced. In the far north, where crabbing was supposed to be allowed starting Dec. 1, there’s a second issue: Testing in Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties revealed poor crab meat quality. The next assessment will take place on or around Dec. 7. The earliest that commercial crabbing could begin in the far north would be Dec. 16, state officials said. Also Friday, the restrictions on recreational crabbers, who had been given the go-ahead in many parts of the state so long as they used hoop nets and crab snares and not traps, were extended to include those far north counties. That new restriction goes into effect Nov. 26.This...

49ers’ Steve Wilks switch from coaches box to sideline a rousing success SANTA CLARA — Steve Wilks rejects the premise that his journey from coaches box to the sideline was the impetus for a defensive recovery for the 49ers.The 49ers’ defensive coordinator coached from the field for the first time with the 49ers, and the result was a 34-3 win over Jacksonville during which they gave up the fewest points since Pittsburgh scored seven points in the regular-season opener. The 49ers sacked Trevor Lawrence five times and surrendered 221 yards, their second-lowest total of the season other than giving up 197 against Dallas in Week 5. That was the last game the 49ers won before snapping a three-game losing streak.Wilks will be back on the sideline Sunday when the 49ers (6-3) host Tampa Bay (4-5) at Levi’s Stadium.Having downplayed the change in advance, Wilks did so again in the aftermath.“Believe me, that wasn’t nowhere near the reason why,” Wilks said Thursday. “We’ve got good players and me being down on the sid...
