Early spring cleaning for the district

This content is provided by Washington Gas.Six months ago, Washington Gas teamed up with WUSA9 for their first sponsored Recycle Day. The Sept. 17 event was an overwhelming success, and they heard from many people that they had tons (literally) of items still waiting to be recycled at home.To help even more old items find a new purpose, they partnered with WUSA9 on Feb. 4 for a second sponsored Recycle Day. Their Springfield, Virginia, location was buzzing as hundreds of vehicles dropped off paper and electronics for a trip to the recycling facility instead of to a landfill. It’s a proven strategy that little changes can produce impressive results, but the combined totals of these two events have been truly staggering.*Paper: 120,000 pounds recycled (60 tons)The average ream of 8.5” x 11” copy paper contains 500 sheets and weighs about five pounds.* That’s more than 12 million sheets—enough to create a stack as high as nine Washington Monuments. It’s also enough square footage to pap...

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 20:31:19 GMT

BALTIMORE (AP) — Baltimore leaders announced criminal indictments Tuesday against 33 people accused of operating a violent drug trafficking organization, saying the prosecution illustrates the continued success of an anti-violence program launched last year in one of America’s most violent cities.Baltimore’s Group Violence Reduction Strategy uses an individualized “focused deterrence” approach to target potential shooters and victims, offering them services and support where possible, in lieu of law enforcement action. But officials said some people, like the 33 defendants facing indictment, are a serious risk to public safety.Nineteen of those indicted have already been arrested, according to a news release from the state attorney general’s office. The others were still being sought Tuesday. They said the arrests should serve as a warning to other people contributing to Baltimore’s high homicide rate.“Don’t let this be you,” Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott said at a news confere...

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Nick Price and Rory McIlroy are footnotes in World Golf Championships history.Price hit the first shot when this series began in 1999, at La Costa in an opening match against Frankie Minoza of the Philippines. McIlroy hit the last one, a 6-foot par putt on the 17th hole at Austin Country Club to beat Scottie Scheffler.Too bad it was only for third place. That was the last of 2,022 matches over 24 years on six golf courses in two countries. Match Play started and ended the WGCs. In between were 57 others played on 13 courses. The eulogy requires an asterisk. The WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai has a contract through 2025. It was last played in 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the PGA Tour hasn’t said what will happen. The China Golf Association ultimately decides if it gets played, though there is a clear sense the tour would love for this one to quietly go away. But is this really the end of the WGCs? WAKE COUNTY, North Carolina (WRAL) — The Wake County Animal Center is looking for the right home for a pair of pals – a goat and a dog who were surrendered to the shelter together.Cinnamon the goat and Felix the dog play, sleep and eat together. Animal center staff are hoping for a rescue partner who can keep them together.“Goats are social animals and so are dogs, so when they’re put together – it makes sense they would find friendship,” said Wake County Animal Center Director Dr. Jennifer Federico. “In many cases of interspecies friendship, the species are not normally seen together, and sometimes, one is of a species that ordinarily preys on the other in nature – whatever the reason for these two bonding, it’s clear what would be best for their well-being is to keep them together.”The duo is not up for public adoption at this time, but the center will reconsider if they can’t find the right rescue by the end of the week.“We’re so thankful that our center has establish...
