OAKLAND — A 63-year-old woman was sentenced to two years probation after pleading no contest to crashing her car in 2016 and killing her husband, who was riding in the passenger seat, court records show.Twyla Johnson, of Oakland, was sentenced to 98 days in jail — with full credit for time served — along with the two-year probation term. In February she pleaded no contest to vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, a felony, and was formally sentenced in April.Police say that on Nov. 25, 2016, Johnson was driving in Oakland with her husband, 61-year-old Donald Brooks, when their vehicle struck a PG&E pole on the 9600 block of Empire Road. She was identified as the driver, and a toxicology report showed her blood alcohol level was roughly twice the legal limit, according to court records.Brooks died at a nearby hospital the following day. (KRON) -- A 15-month-old child was struck by gunfire during an attempted robbery in Oakland Tuesday afternoon, according to the Oakland Police Department. The incident occurred on the 800 block Trestle Glen Road near Lakeshore just before 11 a.m. Man who fell off pier near SF Presidio transported to hospital in critical condition When officers arrived on the scene, they learned that two individuals approached the victim and the child, demanding the victim's belongings. One of the individuals had a firearm.The firearm was discharged during the incident and the child suffered shrapnel injuries, police said. First responders and paramedics with the Oakland Fire Department responded and treated the child. The child was taken to a local hospital for additional treatment and is reportedly in stable condition. An investigation into the incident is active, police said.This is a developing story. (KRON) -- After three hours of spelling, two Santa Clara County junior high school students were named as co-champions of the 2023 California State Spelling Bee, and earned spots to compete in the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee.Eighth-grader Vikrant Chintanaboina from Discovery Charter School - Falcon Campus, and seventh-grader Shradha Rachamreddy from BASIS Independent Silicon Valley Upper School, became co-champions last weekend. Judges declared Rachamreddy, 13, and Chintanaboina, 14, as winners after exhausting an extensive list of words at the state's spelling bee championship held in Stockton. BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts U.S. Attorney Rachael Rollins will resign after a monthslong ethics investigation by the Justice Department’s inspector general into her appearance at a political fundraiser and other potential issues, her attorney said Tuesday. BLANTYRE, Malawi (AP) — A 1-year-old child died and 23 people were missing and feared dead after a hippopotamus charged into and capsized a canoe on a river in southern Malawi, authorities said Tuesday.The long wooden canoe was carrying 37 people across the Shire River on their way to neighboring Mozambique when it was hit by the hippo in the Nsanje District on Monday. Malawian police rescued 13 with the help of World Food Program personnel who were working in the area and provided boats for the rescue operation, Nsanje District Police Commissioner Dominic Mwandira said.The people were feared dead because the search had been going on for more than 24 hours, police spokesperson Agnes Zalakoma said.Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera sent Minister of Water and Sanitation Abida Mia to the scene.
