Colorado Rapids defender Steven Beitashour reflects on 300th career MLS game: “I was close to falling through the cracks”

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:16:42 GMT

COMMERCE CITY — Steven Beitashour spent most of his soccer career being counted out. Thus, it felt almost true to form that within days of the Rapids defender reaching a significant milestone by appearing in his 300th MLS game, his accomplishment was quickly set aside by another player in his mid-30s stealing the league’s headlines.Still, on the same week Lionel Messi announced his intention to play in MLS this summer, the Rapids made sure to shower the 36-year-old veteran with praise.“‘All of the defenders in our locker room should realize what a gem they have in him. ‘Beita’, to me, has some of the best defending instincts of anyone I’ve ever seen. He knows how to smell danger before it even happens and because of that, he’s made this fantastic career,” said head coach Robin Fraser, an MLS lifer who’s been part of the league since its inception and coached him for seven seasons.“… If you can teach Beita’s mentality, that’s...

Bruce Brown’s career-defining night comes in same city where Jim Larrañaga gave him his pregame ritual

Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:16:42 GMT

MIAMI — If time is running out on the Nuggets’ symbiotic relationship with Bruce Brown, at least they’ll always have a special place reserved in his pregame routine.Game 4 of the 2023 NBA Finals, where else but the city he was taught the ritual, belongs in the highlight reel rotation from now on. It will forever inspire comfort and confidence. In autumn of 2017, Brown was slumping. It was his second year at the University of Miami, where his responsibilities were heightened as the team’s top returning scorer. He wasn’t meeting expectations early on. A shooting drought had ripple effects on his aggressiveness. Coach Jim Larrañaga took notice and offered Brown a solution. Not X’s and O’s advice, though.“All he told me to do was go watch some highlights,” Bruce told The Post, smiling in a Miami Hurricanes ballcap. “He told me to watch my highlights.”To this day, Brown pulls up videos of his own highlights to gas himself up befo...

For the time being, the Athletics have thrown it into reverse.A well-placed RBI single by Aledmys Diaz put the A’s up 2-1 in the top of the 10th inning Saturday and Sam Long closed it out against the host Milwaukee Brewers for their fourth straight victory and second straight series win.The A’s improved to 16-50, have a chance to sweep the Brewers (34-31) Sunday and come home with a a 5-4 record on their longest road trip of the season — one that began with four straight losses. The A’s hadn’t won four straight games since 2021 under Bob Melvin, never winning that many in a row at any time in last year’s 102-loss season. The Athletics got six shutout innings from Paul Blackburn, who looked like the guy who pitched a scoreless inning in the All-Star game a year ago before his season went south due to injuries and dealt with middle finger issues most of this season. The bullpen made just one mistake — an 0-1 grooved slider by Richard Lovelady tha...

DANVILLE — On the morning of last March 13, a 17-year-old Monte Vista High School student had just parked her car on campus and was walking to class when she heard a man’s voice say, “Hi.”When the she turned, the girl saw a pants-less adult male, sitting in a four-door sedan, and very obviously masturbating in front of her. After a few seconds she overcame her shock and headed into school, then wasted no time to call police.Over the next 10 days, police not only identified a suspect, but linked him to several other similar indecent exposure incidents in Walnut Creek and Berkeley. When he was arrested, police say his phone showed a strong indicator that he’d driven to Danville looking to expose himself to a child: he allegedly searched for Monte Vista High School on Google Maps just eight minutes before the 17-year-old was accosted. The suspect, identified in court records as 40-year-old Monroe Lebeau III, was charged May 26 with six counts of indecent ex...
