Walter Gerash, a larger-than-life defense lawyer who earned national headlines by taking on some of Colorado’s most notorious criminal cases in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, died Sunday. He was 96.Gerash’s clients included the ex-cop accused of killing four Denver bank security guards in the infamous “Father’s Day Massacre,” a heavyweight boxer charged with murder, the singer John Denver in his Aspen DUI case, and a Littleton 19-year-old with multiple personality disorder who was accused of executing his parents.Known for a booming voice in the courtroom and for sometimes wearing a cape and a beret, Gerash believed the government needed to be challenged and that people’s civil rights deserved to be protected to the fullest extent, his son and several colleagues said Tuesday.“If he felt that someone’s rights were being violated by the government or the government was overreaching, Walter was the first one to step in and fight back on ...Here’s How to Get Presale Code Tickets to Becky G Mi Casa, Tu Casa Tour

SANTA CLARA — Only 20 months ago, Cameron Latu had yet to score a touchdown in his Alabama career. He was relatively new on the scene, at least as a tight end, having converted from outside linebacker after his freshman year. Then he scored two touchdowns in their 2021 season-opening win over Miami.“Before (the 2020) season, I said, ‘You know, I think you have a lot better shot to be a tight end. You got good hands, you got great size, you’re a good athlete.’ And he bought into it,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said after that win.The 49ers bought into it, too. They used a third-round pick (No. 101) to draft Latu, the ninth tight end selected.“He’s a versatile player in that he’s good in both the run and the pass,” general manager John Lynch said, “but he went to ‘Bama as a linebacker and I think he plays like that. He’s an aggressive player.”At least two 49ers won’t be strangers to Cameron Latu when he shows up for rookie minicamp this wee...With George Berkeley’s slave-owner past uncovered, will the city or university consider a name change?
Published Mon, 11 Nov 2024 05:05:42 GMT
The problematic pasts of historical figures have forced the renaming of hundreds of buildings and the removal of dozens of statues from public squares across the U.S. But what happens when the name of an entire community is tainted by racial injustice? It’s perhaps ironic that Berkeley is the latest place to face this question. The city’s reputation for anti-imperialism has only grown since becoming the nation’s first city to swap Columbus Day for “Indigenous Peoples Day” in 1992 and installing city-limit signs that declare “Welcome to the City of Berkeley — Ohlone Territory” in 2019. Last year, the City Council agreed to begin its meetings with a land acknowledgment, recognizing Berkeley as stolen land from its first inhabitants, the Ohlone people. But now, historians at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, have renewed scrutiny of records indicating that the city’s namesake — Bishop George Berkeley, an 18th-century Irish philosopher and influential schol...Northern California woman hid mother’s death for 10 years; mom’s skeletal remains found, police say

Authorities have found skeletal remains of a Ukiah woman whose death was concealed for as long as a decade by her now-deceased daughter in order to use the mother’s bank account, police said Monday. The matter, which Ukiah police are investigating as a suspicious death, was discovered April 24 in the 700 block of El Rio Street after police were contacted by the elder woman’s son, according to a news released issued by authorities. No names have been released and no arrests are expected to be made because the lone suspect is now dead, officials said. The man, who told police he lived out of state, said his mother lived with his sister in Ukiah. He returned to Ukiah last month because his 58-year-old sister was hospitalized and later died.He told police he last communicated with their mother before she died in August 2013.The sister claimed their mother’s remains were transported to a “medical research facility” as per her wishes and no alarms were raised because the mother had been in p...Annual inflation in U.S. cooled off slightly in April

Annual inflation continued its slow-but-steady deceleration in April, according to the latest Consumer Price Index released Wednesday. The CPI climbed by 4.9% for the 12 months ended in April, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, representing a slightly slower pace of increase than the 5% in March. It was below economists’ expectations for the number to remain unchanged. It’s the 10th consecutive month that the headline CPI rate has slowed, and it’s at its lowest rate since April 2021 — when this bout of painfully high inflation started to spike.Excluding food and energy costs, which tend to have more volatility, core CPI was unchanged at 5.5% for the 12 months ended in April. On a monthly basis, both the headline and core indexes recorded increases of 0.4%, matching forecasts from economists, some of whom anticipated higher fuel and used car prices to provide some upward pressure.April’s data showed that the biggest month-on-month gains seen in th...How psilocybin, the psychedelic in mushrooms, may rewire the brain to ease depression, anxiety and more

By Sandee LaMotte | CNNShrooms, Alice, tweezes, mushies, hongos, pizza toppings, magic mushrooms — everyday lingo for psychedelic mushrooms seems to grow with each generation. Yet leading mycologist Paul Stamets believes it’s time for fans of psilocybin mushrooms to leave such childish slang behind.“Let’s be adults about this. These are no longer ‘shrooms.’ These are no longer party drugs for young people,” Stamets told CNN. “Psilocybin mushrooms are nonaddictive, life-changing substances.”Small clinical trials have shown that one or two doses of psilocybin, given in a therapeutic setting, can make dramatic and long-lasting changes in people suffering from treatment-resistant major depressive disorder, which typically does not respond to traditional antidepressants.Based on this research, the US Food and Drug Administration has described psilocybin as a breakthrough medicine, “which is phenomenal,” Stamets said.Psilocybin, ...Editorial: The most important women’s rights law hardly anyone has heard of

It’s the most important women’s rights law that hardly anyone has ever heard of.The Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women aims to end discrimination in employment, salary and equality within the law. Advocates have tried to pass “CEDAW” laws in the Bay Area, California and nationwide with only minimal success. The failure in the United States to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment to the Constitution is shameful. The country is one of only seven United Nations members that has not ratified the 1979 U.N. CEDAW treaty, joining the likes of repressive countries such as Iran, Somalia and Sudan. Senate Republicans have blocked the effort since Jimmy Carter was president. But locally, after a 24-year effort, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors last week voted unanimously to become only the fourth county in the state to adopt a full CEDAW ordinance, following San Francisco (1998), Los Angeles (2021) and San Diego (2022). SAN JOSE — A Fry’s Electronics store in San Jose that closed its doors as part of the sudden implosion of the famed retailer has a new mission while plans for a vast office campus on the choice site take a pause.Instead of being bulldozed to make way for a tech complex, a portion of the one-time Fry’s building, whose entrance is reminiscent of a Mayan temple, is being offered for lease in a marketing effort being led by brokers Phil Mahoney and Joe Kelly of Newmark, a commercial real estate firm.“It could be industrial, logistics, or light manufacturing,” said Mahoney, an executive vice chairman with Newmark.Up to 124,000 square feet of warehouse space is being offered for lease, according to Newmark. The building totals 293,900 square feet and occupies 19.7 acres, San Jose planning documents show. The building contains the former consumer electronics superstore, a warehouse and an office that served as the corporate headquarters for Fry’s and the ...Opinion: How U.S. can build on Chips and Science Act momentum

America’s ability to create high-paying tech and manufacturing jobs is the key to revitalizing our nation and remaining a leader in the 21st century. STEM talent exists everywhere in the United States, but opportunities for people to discover and pursue that talent are not as widespread. To expand access to these jobs and match possibilities with potential, the public and private sectors must work together. We need more public and private partnerships to create jobs — that’s how we built America in the first place. As the director of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the congressman representing Silicon Valley, we see how critical science and engineering are to U.S. leadership. At a recent roundtable with industry and university leaders, we talked about what Americans want — the chance to revitalize communities, paths to the middle class, and ladders up in places where they live. That idea flourished after World War II thanks to federal investment i...Latest news
